Eels at the pheonix on Monday feb 25/13
Not the first time I've seen E and the boys. Different band set up from the last show at Lee's Palace. No horn section this time. I missed them. Five piece band. E on guitar and maracas and rain stick. Two other guitars bass and a drum set up stage right Close to the audience. This configuration probably sounds great in the lead singer riser. Lots of hugging. Two encores.
It was cool. Band was tight. Played everything double tempo as usual. Played lots off the new disc which is great but it's only been out a couple weeks so I don't think the crowd could all sing along. I'm sure they sold a few copies at the merch table.
The opening act(s). Guy smoking bong playing bad air guitar for 10 minutes. Threw a plastic alien into the crowd. Performance piece that could use some work. Or more pot.
The next was a delightful young woman who's name escapes me now. I do remember her tours hashtag though. #10000leaguesundermynutsack
She had some pipes. Kinda reminded me of Neko Case.
Think ill track her down. Go to Eels. You'll enjoy.

The Eels blew my mind. E played with many amazing people and brought a number of instruments to the stage, playing great music.
At first I was a little fazed that the live stuff was a different rendition of his albums, but they were all passionate and I was glad that I got to listen to something a little different than something I could just pop into my stereo.
The venue was intimate and really allowed the band to play for the audience. It was truly fantastic.
The opening act, The Submarines, are also great with melody and lyrics.

Eels always puts on a fantastic show. This was my first time at Lee's Palace and I gotta say Mod Club is the better venue and slightly more intimate with the stage lower than Lee's.
Eels never disappoint - their beards, outfits, instruments, and plain old musical genius make the whole show shine.
The Submarines opened for Eels and they were great, even as a 2-piece without their usual drums & bass. I had never seen them live and they put on a really great show, albeit short!

Favourite moment: E introduced every member of the band and it was a blast to see him to it. He's an incredibly entertaining person. @
Setlist: I wasn't writing this down. Why would you? It doesn't matter, this show was awesome. @
Opening act(s): One was a really boring comedian with a ventriloquist dummy a woman with a dry, raspy voice who sang a few beautiful folkish songs. @

The doors opened at 8pm and there were two opening acts; the Eels didn't start playing until just after 10pm. Doesn't matter, E and the band pretty much shat on every expectation I had and blew me away. The was hands down, one of the most enjoyable concert experiences I've ever had.
The venue was large enough to fit a good number of people but small enough to feel intimate; it makes a huge difference.
The music was mostly a collection of songs from the last three albums though some older hits were played; all of them changed significantly from what they intially sounded like for this live show. I'm definitely going again next time Eels come to town. E knows how to have a good time while showing his audience one, and he's a damn fine performer.

My favourite band of all time. This is the 3rd time we have seen them in Toronto, 2nd time at the Mod Club. The Mod Club is the ideal venue to see them play at, love it!
We were front row centre enjoying every moment. They never disappoint! They played Jungle Telegraph live for the first time I've heard and it was INCREDIBLE. Can't wait til they come back next time.
