My first encounter with the Black Keys occurred in Missoula at Ear Candy on a June day in 2004. I entered the store looking for that funky, back-to-the-roots-rock band I'd heard on the Trail earlier in the day. "No problem" was the clerk's response - "that's the Black Keys, they're from Akron, Ohio." He suggested I might like "Rubber Factory", their latest release, and that I really should also check out "The Big Come Up."
Later that summer I put together a compilation CD for my tanker son in Iraq. It was heavily laced with Keys offerings like "When The Lights Go Out", "Girl Is On My Mind" and "Do The Rump". He later told me he put it on the player in the tank and never took it off even during combat in the 140-degree days in Sadr City.
Fast forward to Spring 2012. My wife and I are living on a small B.C. island between Victoria and Vancouver and the Keys are coming to Rogers arena on May 9th. Can we get tickets?? Yes, and on that evening we join thousands of other fans to witness the Dan and Pat show. We purposely walked fourteen blocks to the concert expecting the need for a big wind-down after. We needed it!
After two hours of some of the best rock we'd ever heard, the excitement and energy were bursting out of us show-goers as we spilled onto the street. Every release from Rubber Factory to El Camino contributed to the playlist. Almost every song from El Camino was played. Pat sat out front and pounded out rhythms like a man possessed. Dan surged around the stage tearing off riffs that pulled roars from the crowd. The keyboards and bass brought the newer stuff to life. The crowd remained on its feet throughout the performance and we couldn't stop dancing.
This band has brought me great joy during these past eight years but the May 19th show topped it all. Thanks Dan and Pat for hanging in all those years and staying true to the music!
